Song 19 of the 50/90 Challenge, and I must still have London on the brain (though after song 18, the Olympics closing ceremony and a recent visit, that's probably understandable), as I ended up writing a slightly tongue-in-cheek tribute to the M4, the motorway which links the UK's capital with south Wales, taking in much of southern England along the way.

I could spend some time explaining all the references, but will save myself the effort by pointing the curious to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M4_motorway">the Wikipedia entry for the M4 motorway</a> :-) I meant the song to sound like Kraftwerk doing a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorik">"motorik"</a> beat, but I think it has come out a bit more like a tribute to John Shuttleworth. Funny how things turn out sometimes...

I should apologise to any listeners from the great land of Wales - not perhaps so much for the odd humorous reference to towns along the route, but I imagine I have fatally mauled the pronunciation of "Pontarddulais" ;-)

(Tech notes: this is another Garageband (iPod Touch) production, albeit with the main underpinning vintage drum machine loop having been programmed in FunkBox and pasted in.)

lyrics

It starts off somewhere near Hammersmith
Bending round the office blocks like a concrete Thames
Emerging out of London, wave hello to Heathrow
Look for Windsor Castle, when the city ends

[chorus]
From the streets of London, to the far west coast
of Wales, we take the M4 - the road we love the most

Through the Berkshire countryside, following the sun
Past the lights of Swindon - all human life is there
Always break for coffee - where? You have a choice
of Reading, or Membury, or Leigh Delamere

From the streets of London...

[bridge]
Fly the Severn Crossing, and through the Newport bores
Wave hello to Cardiff - pedal to the floor
Port Talbot, Neath and Swansea, they all go flying by
'Til finally at Pontarddulais, we bid you goodbye...
