I had no famous friends By the time I turned twenty My face on my NUS card Instead of Times Square And Paul McCartney’s number Remained a mystery With Spotify a cream For facial care A generation on Things change yet look the same Through varifocal lenses At where a long-departed train Once stood… I know I can’t complain My riches lie elsewhere And my own official fan-club Sends me to the shops If my face is in the papers It’s only to read them And I rarely have to wish The world would just stop A generation on...

Retreat Song 02:51
I’ve repaired to the shed For that unwise thing I said I guess it’s possible to be too candid And now I’ve landed here You’ve an hour without me, dear For me to dissect for sure what I did But at least let me present That this wasn’t my intent I couldn’t make this up But darling, let me make it up to you And now I’ve come in from the cold Where I, then you, our stories told And in the telling hear our grievance leaving And so at least we’ve made our peace Until the next time, at least A boring corner of the rug we’re weaving

Like hamsters in a wheel The mornings start so tough This marathon in place I feel we’ve worked enough Wouldn’t you agree That we’ve earned an open road Luckily I know just the place to go Let’s take a trip Not here, but anywhere Let’s take a trip Flip a coin and test the air Let’s take a trip Um, thattaway, I guess Our itinerary’s a mess But somehow that feels the best Yes, I locked the doors The front and back and side You know I always do Well OK, there was that time... Did I fill up the tank? No, I can do that on the way Don’t sweat the details - we’re on our holiday Let’s take a trip… And after fifteen minutes I always turn around For that one essential item We couldn’t do without But always leave at home For my old and busy brain A holiday tradition Like the first day’s heavy rain - ah…

about

This is the first in a projected series of EPs, to be written and recorded on easily-portable instruments and equipment, where possible on my holidays, and/or "on the move". Let's see how far down the road this gets...

credits

released August 6, 2021

All songs written by Tim, and recorded by him on a TASCAM DP-006 digital 4-track "pocketstudio" at home, between June and August 2021
Overdubs and mixing by Tim at Sidingsound I (Logic), during roughly the same period
Tim played acoustic and electric ukuleles, Stylophone GEN X-1 and Bastl Kastle v1.5 synthesisers, Pocket Operators (PO-12 Rhythm & PO-14 Sub), electric ukulele-bass and assorted percussion
Tim also later overdubbed electric guitars on "Long-Departed Train" and “The High Road”, and some Logic guitar-synth bits on "Let's Take A Trip", because... well, he felt like it
Synth, sequence and rhythm programming by Tim
Coffee by the machine in the kitchen
Biscuits by the coffee machine
SPECIAL THANKS TO: Dübreq for amazing support for the Stylophone GEN X-1, above and beyond the call of duty; Mari Dangerfield and Darren Hayman for blazing this trail before me; and probably you too for something…
Remember: to some extent, a first-person narrator may always be unreliable
