After you, my love - no, you The covered market glows tonight Those peaches, they look rather fine But darling, we should travel light Standing there in line, I’m sure You look twice the admission price Something filtered us outside “Let’s go for mixers”, I advise And here the low lights shine tonight Our imaginations pushed to flight The roof’s the limit For you and I We walk familiar paths to where I know a bar I tend for two The kettle heats the mixer quick The syrup’s pink, the remedy too We snuggle up as the film begins With a signal from your phone Two more weeks, the crown to pass Until that day, we’re home alone

Chelsea Gardiner Hedges trimmed into grand shapes Horticulture Gave her a means of escape Lunchtimes, skies fine Walks round Kew Gardens for air In, out the greenhouse Communes with the cacti in there Good gracious, desk spacious Bonsai and flora abound Waters small trees The healthiest you’ll see around Buys cut flowers For burial as victims of crime Trees like family She lavishes more of her time Chelsea Gardiner Has a wish for when her leaves fall Recomposing The ultimate gardener’s call Seed-heads, flower-beds Scattering life all around From dirt, formed first Gifted as soil to the ground

I'm OK 01:51
I’m OK Yet to start self-isolation I’m OK Confident in my own nation Ignore the public polls And baying Facebook trolls We’ve no piles of toilet rolls I’m OK I’m OK Now the sun began to shine I’m OK Never been a happier time A visit to a restaurant Exactly what I really want Don’t want to hear “you can’t” I’m OK If ignorance is bliss Don’t rain on my parade Opinions and facts Sound just the same I’ve got them made I’m OK And relieved we’re all on top I’m OK The other shoe’s about to drop Like my family and friends Mostly through the U-shaped bend We’ll come out the other end I’m OK

Springwatch 03:02
After half a year in chains New life sends up a flare That trails a scent of roses And laughter warms the air Yet we must observe it from Our shady cool abode Behind this pane of glass we may Survey what once we sowed So long ago, our planting now Rewards us handsomely Fresh runner beans and radishes Sage, thyme and rosemary Yet we would turn them over for A sunlit stroll to take Around these streets vacated In Covid-19’s wake The tallest yellow flowers Now stretch up to the sun I know the grass needs mowing And weeding must be done Yet all the world appears to blur When we attempt to stand So here we stay, our confinement much Repeated through this land

In my mind I saddle up Check again, the helmet’s tight I step into the stirrups wide And pedal off into the night A steady breeze impacts my face Nothing else gets in my way So I adopt the wee small hours And let my cares retain the day My trusty steed is brightest white And it sets the streets alight The only chain, it turns the wheel A bicycle, the ride I feel A freedom like you won’t believe Travelling under your own power My favourite way to count my steps From A to B, that I’m allowed ...then I awake - the same old room I’ve memorised for thirteen days Someday I’ll breathe easier And then I’ll turn and ride away

about

I wrote these five songs between 9-13 March 2020, for the "5-in-5 Challenge" from songfancy.com. This challenge took place against the metaphorical "gathering storm" of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, so perhaps it was almost inevitable that this looms large over most of the songs to some degree. However, I hope I have managed to inject a measure of humour into the proceedings, albeit sometimes a bit of the "gallows" variety. Maybe it's one way I use to deal with unnerving situations...

My original demos for the 5-in-5 were very rough indeed (to an extent, deliberately so), and I felt I wanted to re-record them a bit more "tidily", whilst still retaining the "4-track aesthetic". As March progressed - and the coronavirus "clouds" became a full-blown "hurricane", confining us to our homes - I felt I had a mini-project ready made for keeping me occupied between working from home. I'd also call it a "warm-up" for the album project I'm still intending to work on during the rest of the year.

This EP "is what it is", and I hope you find something you like here. Stay safe and well...
