This Ukulele Wants To Say

about

Song 3 for the 50/90 Challenge. I've written a couple of songs on ukulele before, but perhaps surprisingly, not ABOUT the instrument. I thought it was time to redress the balance.

This was recorded straight into a Yamaha Pocketrak 2G digital stereo recorder, with my trusty soprano uke (a Mahalo). In case you wondered, the lyrics have more than a grain of truth to them - my wife DID buy me the uke for Valentine's Day one year.

(I realised after I wrote this one, that it reminded me a bit of Harry Chapin's "Six String Orchestra", via the Muppet Show version. I always rather liked that song, but any influence whilst penning this one was unconscious. Not a bad song to be reminded of, though...)

lyrics

You bought this ukulele one Valentine's Day
I don't think my present came close in any way
It's tough to write a song with a table for two
Though I'll give it a try anytime

[chorus]
This ukulele wants to say “I love you”
Even though it's made of wood and strings
This ukulele wants to thank you warmly
For the chance to help me write these things

He sometimes fights to keep in tune – I know the feeling well
He's made of ply, not koa wood, but who of you can tell?
When he sings, I find him a happy little chap
He's thankfully forgiving when a new song turns out... poorly
