about

Song 3 for 2017: my entry for the Week 1 challenge (“Dreams”), and the first to feature (and be composed with) my most recent instrument acquisition, a Risa Solid electric tenor ukulele.

I recorded the uke via a Line6 Sonic Port VX into my iPhone 6S, running the Music Memos app. This was mainly to make use of MM’s rather handy ability to auto-build drums/bass tracks from recorded material (i.e. you play guitar/uke/piano/whatever, and MM makes a rhythm track for you). I did some of the inevitable tidying-up of the detected chords in MM, before transferring the material to Garageband (again on the iPhone) for further tinkering, as well as a second part with the electric uke (the appropriately “dreamy”-sounding one), and a synth solo played via the Garageband touchscreen.

Finally, when I got home I recorded the vocals, and mixed the lot in Logic Pro X on our Mac.

lyrics

A line of navy blue paints the east
I won’t notice it for an hour at least
While I sail back from the moon
Aurita jellyfish wave me through
And slowly I become aware of you
And day comes all too soon

Sleep fades with the sun
That rises for another day to run
And I want more time to dream

And when our dinghy comes and lands ashore
I want to turn and cast away once more
Terra’s far too firm for me
Mapping clouds on lunar seas
Given choice, I’d choose my reveries
To cold reality

Sleep fades with the sun...
