The Future (Isn't What It Used To Be)

(or "How Technology Can Get In The Way When You Have To Produce A Song Rather Quickly"!)

Song number 3 is another idea from my "FAWM bucket list" (of concepts for potential songs to write): a pastiche/spoof of 1980-era European electro-pop, along the lines of Kraftwerk, Gary Numan and (especially) John Foxx circa "Metamatic". It's not really a musical area I've explored much, despite loving vintage synthesisers, rhythm machines and other analogue electronica, but I enjoyed my experiments during 50/90 2012, and thought it was time to take another punt at the genre, and hopefully have a bit of fun at its expense...

To cut a long story short: this demo is considerably less developed than I would've liked, but quite simply, on a "one new song every two days" schedule, I simply ran out of time :-( Most of it was recorded in Garageband on my new iPhone 4S (my first musical excursion with the device), and when I ran out of tracks I transferred it to Logic Pro and added a couple of guitar synth parts, including the vocoder.

Sadly, some squiggly electronic FX I generated in the Animoog synth on the iPhone and pasted into Garageband, for some reason got lost in the transfer to Logic, and I didn't have time to relocate them, so I've done a slightly rough mix and posted it here. Maybe I'll revisit the song at a later date, and bring it up to where I "hear" it in my head... hope you like it anyway!

lyrics

Trocadero - late-80s
Neon lights, mirrored screens
Soundtracked by Walkman
I play "The Man-Machine"

Step out to the dirty streets
The present, unexpectedly
Maybe the future
Isn't what it used to be

Automatic - "Metamatic"
Jet-packs, flying cars
The Net came from nowhere
So near, yet so far

A super-computer
In every hand I see
Maybe the future
Isn't what it used to be

The sky - no limit
Bases on the moon
Four decades - low orbit
Flying nowhere soon

The stars we aimed for
And missed totally
Maybe the future
Isn't what it used to be
