about

I was wondering how to “kick off” FAWM 2016, so I delved into my metaphorical “grab-bag” of ideas, and decided to have a go at “mid-90s power-pop pastiche”. You know the kind of thing - the likes of Weezer and Fountains Of Wayne in the US, and Britpop-era records from artists like Nick Heyward. Not my usual “milieu”, but let’s fly this kite and see if it doesn’t plummet to earth, eh?

Techie bits: I wrote and recorded this in GarageBand on iPad. The drums were provided by GB’s new “virtual drummer” feature - in this case, a young chap called “Kyle”, who certainly has the chops for this song! I played and sang the rest, including electric piano (GB “smart keyboard”), electric guitars (Steinberger S-series) and bass guitar (Squier Precision Special). The guitars and vocals were the first recordings I made with my new Line6 Sonic Port VX mobile recording interface, plugged straight into the iPad. I transferred the lot over to Logic and mixed the song there.

This song is somewhat heavier than I usually come out with, but my “genre gameplan” for this FAWM is “anything goes”...

lyrics

Someone called the Nineties
The Sixties upside down
I wondered what they had in mind
The flowers dried and brown
When videos came on cassette
And tweets came from the sky
When mobile phones weighed half a ton
And cost the same to buy

[chorus]
The 90s called, a joke to crack
Would we like their decade back?
The 90s called back anyway
“Admit it - you preferred life this way?”

[verse 2]
Friends we met, and got to know
And watching home alone
The internet at tortoise speed
Whilst paying for the phone
I cast my minds’s eye to recall
What key events occurred
An oasis in the years of war
Or maybe, just a blur

The 90s called…

[bridge]
Before you know - it’s twenty years ago
And often we find
The ruling men you thought so low
Were not the worst, in the end...
