about

There are times when I wonder how many of my fellow FAWM-ers lead some kind of hermetic existence - as if when the end of January hoves into view, they take themselves off down some dirt-track to a remote tumbledown shack with minimal utilities, to ensure that no-one and nothing stands between them and their fourteen-songs-in-February target.

OK, don't try and unpick that one - it'll fall apart if you only look at it (why would a remote shack have Internet access, for one...), but my point stands: I just don't know how many of my co-runners in this race manage to keep the fine songs coming. It's not (so much) lack of inspiration; more that Real Life keeps shoulder-barging in and hauling me away from trying to bash out the FAWM number that's due on that day. I'll leave it at that, but suffice it to say I'm still "a day behind schedule", and I can't afford to lose any more...

What? Song 5? Oh yes - here it is... and yes, it lives up to its name in more than one way! I wrote it "off" an experiment with a few iPhone apps - I used a "Korg KR55" loop from FunkBox, and also programmed a few bass synth notes into the sequence (FB now does simple bass lines), with Sunrizer XS "voicing' the bass. I piped both apps' output through Audiobus to Multitrack DAW, and recorded three tracks (drumbox, synth bass, acoustic guitar) at the same time. Overdubs of vocal and electric guitar rounded off the song, which I mixed in Logic Pro.

This one "is what it is", really :-)

lyrics

I've got to write this quick song for you
Can't guarantee a masterpiece to set the world aflame
The melody and chords aren't all that new
And you could've heard some other songs that maybe sound the same

[chorus]
But it's a quick song - it's your song
Especially for you
It's a quick song - it's your song
And the latest... in the queue

Do you mind the demo's slightly rough?
I was thwarted in my attempts to book the Wrecking Crew
So it's just me, this old guitar and a beatbox on my phone
And for our present purposes, I hope that it will do

But it's a quick song...
