Long Sunlit Hours

about

A couple of days further behind schedule, but here is my song 10 - 20% done! - and my submission for the Week 3 ("three") challenge. I have somehow managed it despite being on holiday ;-) You can imagine how the setting might have fed into this song - however, the title actually came from the FAWM random title generator. Serendipitous!

This demo wasn't the first one of this song that I posted. Before leaving on holiday, I somehow managed not to pack the data/charging cable for the iPod Touch (and haven't tracked down a replacement), which has rather limited how much I've been able to use the iPT for Garageband whilst I've been away. Despite this, I attempted to record a demo of the present song in GB, and was one track away from completing it when I got the "battery about to conk out" message.

Thankfully I saved the results before shutting the machine down, but I'm a couple of songs "behind" for 50/90 and didn't want to wait any longer, so I bashed out a quick acoustic demo using my wife's Yamaha Pocketrack recorder. This is not the demo presented here (which is the Garageband version); however, I may make the fully-acoustic demo available here at a later date.

In the end, I finally managed to source an extra sync/charging cable for the iPod Touch, so was able to complete Garageband demo - this one :-) It's closer to how I "hear" the song than the plainer acoustic version, but I think both demos have their merits... and anyone who thinks I'm keen on the track "'39" by Queen, has a good ear ;-) (Attentive listeners will notice one lyrical "fluff" in the first line - I sing "glisten" instead of "glinting", but haven't decided which I like more yet!)

(Technical notes: I played guitalele and "stick tambourine" (bought from the Eden Project this week!) and sang, all recorded via the iPT's built-in mike, hence the slight noise and compression effect. The bass drum and upright bass parts were programmed/entered in Garageband.)

lyrics

Evening sunbeams glinting on the sea
You and me and daughter makes three
Seagulls skim the shore and sing for joy
And who am I to disagree
With them?

[chorus]
The gift that we have
These long sunlit hours
The best that leaves me wishing
That slowing down time was in my power
To give

Sails on the horizon pierce the sky
Walk the beach, our girl rushes by
The rockpools too important to wait
But does she need an alibi
For fun?

[bridge]
Stop the clocks
Keep tomorrow at bay
Our home is waiting
I say, let it wait
For today
