My first song for FAWM 2017 felt a bit on the serious side (but I had to get it out of my system and I quite liked the results, so neeerrrrr...

It's a threadbare lyrical trope of 50s rock'n'roll classics, where the teenage narrator finally finishes a week of school and homework, and is raring to dash out the door for a Friday night of driving between drive-in movies and hot-dogs at the diner. (Exhibit A: about 80% of Eddie Cochran's best-known hits...) Time for me to take an alternative, 2017-era look at the tradition?

Musically, I had a specific track in mind that I was spoofing somewhat here, and if you really want to know (and couldn't guess), I'll tell you!

Tech stuff: I recorded this entirely on my iPhone 6S (Multitrack DAW), with BIAS Amps for the electric guitars (Ministar Testar) and bass guitar (Squier Precision Special). FunkBox provided the two-step "chug" in the background; I overdubbed a Meinl Travel Cajon for the "snare" sound, and discovered that no amount of EQ and compression is going to make it sound like a vintage snare drum, but it'll do here ;-)

The "backing vocals" (whom I hereby dub "The Androidaires") came from Virsyn's fascinating Harmony Voice app, using the MIDI note voicing feature triggered from SoundPrism Pro.

Transferred to and mixed in Logic Pro X, with lots of luverly slapback echo...

lyrics

Friday night, and I’m good to go
Down to the sofa to watch my show
This is how I get my kicks
A three-hour binge-watch on Netflix

All right
I’m gonna paint the lounge tonight
I’m here
And I brought the crisps and beer
Woo-ee
Tonight I’ll get to episode three

To the clubs, tonight you’ll run
You’re not fooling anyone
We both know you’d rather be
Bingeing “Star Trek” next to me

All right…

A Friday night with plenty thrills
Unless that bag of peanuts spills
If the fridge is on your way
Another bottle, if you may

All right...
