about

With the hours now counting down to the end of FAWM 2017, here is the 13th song I wrote, albeit the 14th and final one I actually posted, as it felt to me like the “right” one to finish on...

It seems that with most FAWMs I have taken part in, I feel like I put that last big effort in when I reach the finish. I'm quite fond of this song already (IISSM) - it's got a bit of a Jack Johnson-sort of feel about it, to my ears, anyway.

As with every song for FAWM 2017, this song was recorded on my iPhone 6S - in this case, using the Multitrack DAW app. The drums were provided by Soft Drummer, a great-sounding and intuitive app to use, which I think you’ll be hearing more of on my recordings in future.

Due to both artistic and constrained-time reasons, I wanted to keep this song relatively “stripped-down”, so I recorded “just” one electric guitar track (on my Ministar Testar), plus one electric ukulele part (Risa Solid). I have hardly played bass guitar at all this FAWM - only on “Friday Night” (song 2!) - so I dusted off the Squier Precision Special for this last outing. Except for the drum track, the audio was all captured via the Line6 Sonic Port VX; all three guitar tracks were recorded via BIAS Amp on the iPhone, whilst the vocals went through MicSwap Pro. Mixed in Logic Pro X on our Mac.

FAWM no 5 for me: finish line, here's 14 songs, job's a good'un

lyrics

The western sky, from rose to navy blue
And breezes cross the field to me and you
The distant town, turning on the lights
The fading day lets in another night

No planetarium put on a show
Like this above us, an evening sky aglow
A billion tiny fires in the deep
Gathering to guard us as we sleep

We know the tales the skies above have told
Of hunters, dragons, ploughs and knights of old
But as the sun departs for other lands
The words leave too, and we both understand

No planetarium put on a show...
