about

Well. Ninety days after I embarked on a heroic, if not foolhardy, mission to find out whether I could launch fifty original songs into the world in three months, here is my final submission for the 2012 50/90 Challenge...

...and it’s number 36. There will be time for the postmortems and “why”s later (and I’m proud of what I’ve achieved, incidentally :-) ), but I felt I wanted to go out on a positive note, as well as incorporate a few of the leitmotifs of my participation in this loopy escapade of ours!

Leitmotifs, eh? There are quite a few of those here: like a good number of my submissions this time around, this demo was recorded on an iPod Touch using Garageband (including the electric guitars - amps, effects and all were GB-processed), and for good measure I threw in an analogue rhythm machine loop generated by FunkBox (FB loops feature on quite a few of my 50/90 songs too).

The organ, bass and drums are all GB instruments, played via the iPT touchscreen (!). Finally, I couldn’t let this last song go out without adding to the coda, a short part with my Yamaha Guitalele, the instrument that perhaps more than any other (for better or worse!), influenced my songs and demos for 50/90 2012.

Hopefully, my fellow 50/90-ers will feel comfortable with the sentiments here - it’s been an honour to run this “crazy race” with you all, and I hope to encounter you further down the road... perhaps for FAWM in Feb 2013? :-)

lyrics

Look how far we’ve come
Down a winding path
Now the end’s in view
We might share a laugh
A cocktail of achievement and relief

We were random friends
In a crazy race
A marathon
At a sprinter’s pace
I view the finish line in disbelief

[chorus]
And it’s time to bid goodbye for now
Taking a collective bow
Time to lay our tired notepads down

How much ground has passed
All those notes and words
From these recent weeks
Only mostly heard
Offered up to play and to be played

How much further on
From where we began
Even where the end
Didn’t match the plan
It’s a source of pride when the course was stayed
