about

You know what it's like with FAWM - some songs come out pretty well finished (fully FAWM-ed?... sorry); others might be sketchy; whilst still others are "on the way", but the relentless onward pace of FAWM means you simply have to present what you've got and move on, with the hope that you'll be able to return to the song in future, and turn it into how you "hear" it in your mind.

I feel my song 4 is one of the latter, very much a "work in progress". I know how I want it to sound when it's complete (and you can get a rough idea from what's here), but the arrangement of this demo is just acoustic guitars and vocals, when I envisage a few more "ornamentations" in the final version.

Moreover, I'm still working on the lyrics (both refining what's there, and adding a bit more), and even the title should be regarded as a "working" one. Don't misunderstand me - this song is one I want to work on, and I think it's coming out pretty well already, but it really feels like an "interim" version to me. Not bad, for all that, though :-)

I wouldn't call the lyrics "nonsense" (as per the week 2 challenge), but I'd say they're a bit darker in tone than I'm usually wont to write. They're also, I think, deliberately "enigmatic" - the subject matter I had in mind, isn't what it appears to be, and it's also unlikely to be about what you might think either. Work THAT out...

This was recorded in Multitrack DAW on my iPhone 4S - both acoustic 12-string parts via the TASCAM iM2 mike; the voices via Oktava MK219 mike into TASCAM iU2 interface.

(UPDATE (2014/02/13): As this FAWM has progressed, I now think this is one of my stronger contributions so far, so I've upgraded it to a "favourite". I still think I'd like to work on it more - perhaps for a future "proper" album - but I feel that shouldn't detract from what I've got so far.)

lyrics

You're looking out from the walls
Expecting armies at dawn
Hurl themselves at your castle ramparts
The sudden rush from below
The strike you dreaded one day
By the setting sun, tear your world apart

This was your sanctuary
Under a banner of blue
Children played in safety by your entrance
Your kingdom now under siege
The trebuchet at your gate
Poised for destruction from a distance

Each quiet sunset just brings
Another night to endure
For sure, the reckoning you fear comes later
The helplessness that you feel
Perhaps the hardest to bear
Just watch and pray for mercy's favour
