Another Hippy Song

about

50/90 2012 song 5, and it's another pastiche (hard on the heels of my "Major Tom" effort) - I'll leave it to you to guess what song(s) I had in mind...

I should explain that this came very quickly, almost simultaneously with the "Major Tom" song (which leapt out in the middle of me composing "Hippy" and refused to leave until I finished it). I recorded the backing tracks over the last three or four days, but couldn't lay down the vocals until I got a free "slot" this evening. Hence the two songs being uploaded almost at the same time.

Couple of techie points: the vocal isn't great, but I'm very self-conscious about "letting rip" when the family's in the house (no giggling, there). Maybe I'll re-record it sometime. Also, I'm not a great keyboard player, so I had to play the piano and Mellotron parts into Logic in short sequences. Took me a while.

In terms of the song itself: I'm not quite sure about the melody yet, especially as I'm trying to make it different from the main song that I'm spoofing (!). And of course, the playing's really sloppy, so I'd almost certainly re-record this from scratch if it made an album's shortlist...

lyrics

The flutes are Mellotron-ic
The guitars gently weep
Our drummer’s trying hard
Not to fall asleep
So listen for a while
And then sing along
To another hippy song

A second Mellotron
To add some eerie strings
I wax poetic on
Environment things
Our drummer’s woken for
His big chance to shine, with
A great loud fill, and it’s time...

We’re mean to the world
And I can’t find a girl
Just like the decent rhymes
That pass me by-y-y-y....

I feel this song is flagging
We’re not yet halfway through
Some woolly platitudes
I think they might do
A lift is needed here
So we’re gonna forge
A guitar solo from George

And now we’re near the ending
How did those strings get in?
We can afford just this
Tape keyboard machine
I’m running out of words
So I bid “so long"
To another hippy song
