about

In previous FAWMs, I've often worked in a kind of hybrid synth-pop style, which for various reasons I have hardly touched upon this year. Song 12 is FAWM 2016's first - and probably only - return to this approach.

I'm scrambling a bit to regain lost time after a few days when it has been hard to find any time to write and record, and I admit I'm feeling pretty shattered, so I hope it doesn't show too much here!

I started recording this in Garageband on iPad, with an initial drum-machine part programmed in FunkBox (which I've hardly used this FAWM, despite it being a mainstay app in previous years). The second drumbox is a GB instrument, as are the main pad, arpeggio and bass synths. I added electric guitar and a vocal, then transferred the project to Logic and finished overdubs with vocoder (EVOC 20) and an extra pad synth (Arturia Solina V).

As with many of these songs, I'll probably remix this one before any proper release, but it'll do for now, eh?

lyrics

The silent mists
Wrap me round
I beckoned sleep
None to be found
Too tired to go
Too far to stop
Grasping for
The words to drop

I’ve spent too much time
Outside the space that I made for myself
Can’t find the rhymes that I
Used to entice with the greatest of ease
They slip away nicely while leaving no trace
Outside the space

The distant cheers
That coax me hence
A golden arch
A rusty fence
My conscious mind
No longer clear
On instinct pure
I found you here

I’ve spent too much time...

[bridge]
Lift me over
Lead me closer
